The Marines will have a special warfare unit too, according to the Washington Post.

Right before I left the Army, one of the new hot tickets (an assignment that would add to your changes of selection for promotion) was to serve on a Joint Staff (aka: J staff=J-1, J-2, J-3, etc.). Makes me wonder if special ops is the flavor of the month now?
Considering how all the services have historically been hostile to special units:

  • Will this trend last?
  • Or, will once again will a special ops assignment become a career killer?

Special Ops ebbs and flows with the times--in the early 70s, there was an army urban myth of two Special Forces sgt.s major arguing about who had had to mow the grass in front of the barracks. In theory a Special Ops assignment is part of a normal officer career path, who knows what the future holds. In WWII, where the whole special ops obsession began, there's evidence to suggest that special ops missions, while definite home morale boosters, actually detracted from overall mission planning. By the way, the Washington Post failed to mention the few, proud, and fiercely independent Marines function as security guards and jailers for the Navy.
