Seattle. Just an Ocean Away

According to the Mainichi Daily News, Seattle is becoming well known and popular with the Japanese. Much of this increased awareness results from Seattle Mariners' right fielder Ichiro Suzuki and the recent signing by the Mariners of Kenji Jojima, will be the first catcher from Japan to play on a Major League team.

Let's hope that Seattle's new visitors can put with our currentl streak of rain.

I've often wondered in a sceince fiction manner, about the reactions of an American transported from Dec. 8, 1941 to a modern baseball games. This person would at first feel familiar in the retro-stadium, and at the same time start noticing differences. After paying five dollars for a beer that tastes like dishwater, he would be angry. Then he would be amazed by the big screen TV over the outfield. Then he would notice the TV says Mitsubushi. Wait a minutes, he thinks, aren't those the Zeros. He would see a Japaense baseball player come to bat, to the cheers of the crows. He wouldn't be able to read the Japanese ads. In a panic, he stumbles around, bump into polite Asian tourist waiting in line for sushi. He runs outside and is near run over by a Toyota. Then this person somehow is tranported back to 1941, and while he is unsure that what he saw was real or a dream, he feels that it was a sign, and he decides to put aside his moral qualms and do critical work with the Manhattan project.

That's a great scenario for a sci-fi story. It's worthy of Harry Turtledove or Phillip Dick.
